Gluten free diet case studyJul 27, 2017
A lot of people swear by these diets over both the short- and long-term, but not necessarily to just lose weight. We take a look at popular diet trends, assess whether they provide all essential nutrition and fill in the gaps sensibly.Today we look at gluten Free diet!
Gluten is simply a group of natural proteins found most prominently in cereals such as wheat, rye, barley, spelt, kamut and tricalate.
Unfortunately, a small percentage of us are medically diagnosed with coeliac disease, gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity need to avoid this seemingly innocent ingredient for a whole host of short-term and long-term symptoms. To them, gluten is life or death.
Notice that I mentioned the words medically diagnosed.
There are many people who have not shown a real need to avoid gluten, but who want to lose weight fast and they’ve heard that being careful about gluten diet does the trick.
A truly gluten-free diet, consisting mainly of foods which are naturally gluten-free, cuts out many processed foods that might be the real reason why you’re feeling discomfort, pain and non-progress with your body composition goals.
Examples of these foods are fruits, vegetables, rice, potatoes, beans, legumes, eggs, grass-fed butter, coconut oil, dairy products and animal proteins (fish, poultry, red meat).
Just sticking to the above foods can get a bit repetitive and bothersome, especially when you see the variety of gluten-free sweet treats available in the supermarket. This causes you to lose motivation really fast!
If you decide that your gluten-free diet can (or does) mainly consist of processed gluten-free substitutes of your favorites – pasta, bread, cake and biscuits – with little thought given to the micronutrients, remember that these alternatives are overdone with processed sugars and artificial additives to make up for real flavour.
Interesting recipes that require a bit of substitution imagination, to remove the gluten-containing products and replace with wholesome ingredients e.g. lasagna sheets with zucchini slices, or wheat flour for desiccated coconut. Twice the amount of fiber and vitamins with none of the discomfort!
